VE Day Celebrations

The Swastika Party

We are pleased that The Swastika Party was part of this year’s celebrations of Victory in Europe - VE Day May 8th 1945. Our own play premiered on May 19th-21st 2005. On May 8th we were learning lines and rehearsing!

The achieving and sustaining of peace in any age is something we all wish for and the play considers deeply the impact on war and its symbols on the lives of ordinary people. Their response under pressure turns such people into extraordinary people!

Our play is set in the Blitz of 1941 yet the spirit of London’s women who contributed so much to victory on the Home Front is captured at this time of celebration and remembrance.

We were happy to see World War II veterans and those with memories in our audiences of May 19th-21st 2005 who joined us at the Marlborough Theatre as part of their V.E Day Remembrance. Our oldest audience member was a sprightly 95 and remember the Great War as well!

The final document of unconditional surrender was signed at General Dwight Eisenhower's headquarters in Reims on 7 May. Prime Minister Winston Churchill and King George VI wanted Monday 7 May to be VE Day, but in the event, bowing to American wishes, victory was celebrated on 8 May. The USSR waited an extra day before beginning their formal celebrations.

WAR IN THE WEST
IS OVER!

Today is VE-Day . . .

Unconditional surrender has been accepted by Germany's remaining leaders.
The Prime Minister will make an official announcement in accordance with the arrangements between Britain, Russia and the United States at 3pm this afternoon.

TODAY AND TOMORROW ARE TO BE PUBLIC HOLIDAYS IN CELEBRATION OF OUR VICTORY

We also remember and salute, with gratitude and pride, the men and women who have suffered and died to make this triumph possible
