CATS3000 Associate
Simon McCarty

CATS-eye view:

I met Simon in 2004 and have been impressed by his ability to work with people, energising individuals, groups, teams and communities.

He brings a unique approach to creating collaboration and authentic communication through rhythm grounded in a genuine diagnosis of an organisation’s needs.

Simon has worked with Earthsong since its inception in 1995. He has a long history of facilitating drum and percussion programmes in the community and in corporate settings. Having formed his own companies in 1997, 'Tribal Earth' and 'Talking Drums', these have since been absorbed by 'World of Rhythm', of which he is the Director.

Through love of music and tireless work, Simon has become greatly experienced in the organisation of musical events in many countries. His knowledge of rhythm and facilitation is highly regarded and much in demand. He is currently working on projects in England, USA, Greece, Hawaii, Nepal and Bhutan.

In 2003, he established the 'Happy Home' Hostel in Kathmandu , Nepal , as part of 'The Pegasus Project' for homeless children. Much of Simon's time is dedicated to building upon the success of this venture and expanding the hostel for a greater number of beneficiaries. With the Pegasus English School , World of Rhythm works through related projects to provide shelter, health, education and music for children in Nepal.

The corporate format involves a "hands-on" musical challenge using instruments from different countries including Africa , India , Indonesia , Australia , S.America , Japan and China . Employees are given teamwork challenges such as creating and performing their own compositions. What seems an impossible premise tends, however, to yield fascinating results. The extent to which people become motivated in a short period of time reveals, imperceptibly, just how much they enjoy the chance to perform in a musical setting: how many people say, "Oh, I'd love to be able to play an instrument."

Everybody has the ability to be musical. These are well-facilitated sessions which engender a great deal of enjoyment, self-confidence, team-spirit, relaxation and laughter. This is precisely why we love to create the experience - it produces the same effects in us!
